In honour of the man who in 1541 lead an expedition from the Atlantic coast in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina with the aim of arriving in Asuncion, Paraguay. Along the course of this voyage he encountered the Iguazu Falls, and is considered the first non-indigenous person to have ever seen them.
